Awaken Your Giant

Happiness is not by chance but by choice.

Fragile

They had a computer that was infested with viruses.
I asked them to ship back the computer carefully packing, padding and securing the tower to ensure its safe arrival.
Please also mark the box ‘Fragile’ and ship it with insurance.

This is how it arrived this morning.
…Apparently, spelling was not the only oversight.

iForgotMyMouse

Once again, its almost 1pm here and I was just wrapping up my daily round of RSS feeds, blogs, and IM'ing when I get a call for...get this..."a help request".KOSIT?
User just requested a mouse because he forgot his at home.
O'rly?
I guess lack of planning on your part constitutes an emergency on my part.  Not only does he need it now, but he has his supervisor call me moments after his request to ask "Are you on the way?"  Because, of course, he is incapable of coming over to me to get a mouse. The thinking is well the mouse is a computer part and therefore IT's responsibility.
Very well, I will stop everything I'm doing right now for your mouse.  Stopping everything consists of changing my IM status to "I'll be right back" and minimizing Digg and 13 other non work related tabs.
For occasions like this, I have dig into my bag of "damn that's foul" and see what I can serve up. I save old keyboards & mice; the ones people discard or ones that barely function from lint build, coffee stains and/or frayed wires.
Example: Above is the mouse of a long time employee who was recently shown the door while being handed his hat. LOL's.  Safe to say he got 3-4 years use out of it, so much so, you can see the dirt build up and the clean spots from where his fingers were.  When he was packing his office to head on that long journey, he left his mouse behind figuring that it was company property.

Now that's honor!!!

I walk into the guest office where iForgotmymouse is waiting eagerly and greets me with "oh great; the track pad was killing my fingers".   He reaches out for the mouse, but it's best for me to patronize him now and make sure the mouse is...properly plugged in.  Once I hear the USB connect sound, I place it down in front of him and say "you're all good to go".
I start to leave the office as he is going to use mouse, turning back briefly I see him look at the mouse and hesitate using it, he looks at me about to say something.  I beat him to the punch by saying "make sure I get it back, that's the only loaner mouse we have". ;)

It's the small things people.
